NASA working on supersonic commercial aircraft
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — It’s been 20 years since you could jet across the Atlantic at supersonic speeds.
Now, NASA is looking into breaking the sound barrier again for commercial travel.
The X-59, built by Lockheed Martin, is a test aircraft that is part of NASA’s advanced air vehicles program.
It aims to improve high-speed travel.
NASA thinks it could eventually fly from New York to London in as little as 90 minutes.
It means the plane would travel more than three thousand miles per hour!
Supersonic flight is currently banned over the U.S. because it produces disruptive sonic booms.
However, NASA says the X-59 is supposed to produce much quieter booms.
NASA believes there are 50 “potential passenger markets” for supersonic flights.
