NDOT proposes improvements to two dangerous Palmyra intersections

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Two dangerous intersections in Palmyra could be getting a much-needed makeover next year.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation held an informational meeting at Palmyra High School on Thursday to discuss proposed improvements to the intersections of Highway 2 and Highway 43, as well as Highway 2 and Nebraska Spur 66-A.

According to officials, the proposed project includes adding a combined Restricted Crossing U-turns (RCUT) at both intersections.

A westbound offset right turn lane would be built at the Highway 2 and Highway 43 intersection, and an eastbound offset right turn lane would be built at the Highway 2 and S-66A intersection.

Additional improvements would include new lighting, officials say.

The open house allowed citizens to get an up-close look at the new designs. There were some on board, and some not.

“I think this is going to create some problems. I think there is going to be more accidents created, than there is now,” said Lyle Dowding.

But, others are excited about the improvements.

“Something needs to be done. I came here wondering if they would build an overpass, but if they’re making R-turns it will be an improvement,” said Gary Horn.

The purpose of this project is to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes, improve the reliability of the transportation system and perpetuate the mobility of the traveling public.

According to NDOT officials, they feel this is the right move.

“It’s fairly new to Nebraska, maybe a little foreign. But, I think once people drive it they’ll see it’s pretty easy to navigate,” said Brandon Varilek.

Construction could being as early as spring 2026 and be completed by fall 2026.

More information on this project can be found on NDOT’s website.
