LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska Department of Transportation is urging drivers to be cautious of workers in construction zones.

Brandon Varilek, an engineer at NDOT, said motorists should slow down and avoid distractions while approaching work zones.

“As you’re driving through a work zone, don’t think of those people as contractors or DOT staff but think of them as your father, son or daughter, and drive accordingly,” Varilek said.

State transportation workers make efforts to remain safe in these construction zones, such as wearing reflective vests.

This year, two NDOT employees have been killed while working on roads.

Varilek said the department is “redoubling” its efforts on safety following the deadly crashes.
