Nearing records of old this St. Patrick’s Day; midweek winter storm with high winds
A big warm up is upon us with a wee bit of wind this St. Patrick’s Day.
Afternoon temperatures in Lincoln are expected to be close to the old record high for this holiday (84° set back in 1894).
This week will be quite the roller coaster ride: madness in March!
The next system late Tuesday into Wednesday will potentially bring some thunderstorms, snow and a lot of wind again.
Here’s one of the latest versions of Stormcast with the timing of storms and snow.
Lincoln and some of eastern Nebraska has been highlighted for a Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk for the potential for isolated hail with a storm or two Tuesday night.
Rain will switch to snow Wednesday morning with high winds (gusts up to 50-60 mph) lasting a while that day.
Blizzard conditions will be possible, and a Winter Storm Watch for now is in place for almost all of eastern Nebraska from Tuesday night through Wednesday evening, March 18-19th.
The timing of the higher winds matches up with when snow will be falling Wednesday morning through Wednesday afternoon and evening. You can watch the timing of these winds hour-by-hour in the video below.
We’re still working to forecast snow amounts through this event, but more snow is expected just northwest of Lincoln for now up through northeast Nebraska. This area of higher snow amounts could extend back toward Holdrege and Alma in south-central Nebraska as well.
After a cold and messy day with treacherous travel expected on Wednesday, we’ll warm for the start of spring on Thursday.
