Nearly 200 acres torched in latest Nebraska wildfire

It's been described as "one of the worst" fires the area's ever had

SUTHERLAND, Neb. (KLKN) – A fire that swept through western Nebraska left nearly 200 acres of land destroyed.  The blaze started around 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Thankfully, there were no injuries, fatalities, or homes damaged.

“As far as our fires, this is probably one of the worst we’ve had,” said Sutherland fire chief, Roger Lathrop.

Lathrop was traveling to assist another crew with a fire near North Platte when he received the call about this latest blaze near Snake Road.

Firefighters had trouble moving around the challenging terrain, but the North Platte River acted as a natural barrier to help contain the fire.

The blaze is still considered an active scene, as of about 5 p.m. on Sunday.

People have been asked to keep away from the area so firefighters can watch for hot spots.

If you see a fire burning, don’t hesitate to report it.  Emergency responders also cautioned white ash could appear as smoke.
