LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Lancaster County man says he watched as nearly $3,700 worth of checks were stolen from his mailbox.

This happened on Saturday just before 5 p.m., according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said the 67-year-old saw a pickup truck stop at his Raymond home near Davey Road and North 14th Street before pulling out a couple of checks.

The man called his bank right away and had them both canceled, so he didn’t lose any money.

The sheriff’s office reminds everyone to use a mailbox with a lock or go to the post office whenever sending checks.

Earlier this year, Channel 8 reported that cases of check fraud have been spiking nationwide, while complaints of mail theft more than doubled.
