Nebraska backs ranchers’ lawsuit over ‘Product of USA’ beef labeling
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska joined 10 other states Tuesday in a court filing over beef labeling.
Eleven attorneys general, including Mike Hilgers, filed an amicus brief in support of cattle ranchers in a lawsuit against several manufacturers.
The lawsuit accuses JBS Foods, Tyson Foods, Cargill Meat Solutions and the National Beef Packing Company of wrongly using the “Product of USA” label on beef that was not raised in the U.S.
The U.S. District Court of South Dakota sided with the ranchers, but the case has since been appealed to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
“Our office is committed to ensuring that Nebraskans can purchase and consume accurately labeled beef products,” Hilgers said in a press release. “The Cornhusker State is a proud producer of beef, and we are joining our sister states to protect American ranchers and their businesses.”
Colorado, Kansas, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming joined in the brief.
