LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Nebraska basketball freshman Leo Curtis is tabbed to represent Iceland in this weekend’s FIBA U20 EuroBasket.

The 7-foot-1, 220-pound forward from Reykjavik, Iceland, is representing his national team for the third straight summer.

He previously played in the 2024 U20 EuroBasket and the 2023 U18 EuroBasket events.

According to the Husker basketball team, Curtis spent most of June with the Big Red before heading to Iceland to train for the event.

Curtis came to the United States last season and played at CATS Academy in Massachusetts, where he averaged 12.3 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game.

He helped the school to a 28-7 record and a No. 5 national ranking. His squad also finished runner-up in their conference tournament.

At the end of the season, he was a first-team All-NEPSAC Class AA honoree.

Curtis signed with Nebraska in May and was ranked No. 84 nationally in the 2025 class by On3. He was also rated the No. 11 center in the class.

“Leo’s combination of size and skill set is an ideal fit for our system” Fred Hoiberg said in a press release when Curtis signed. “He is a natural stretch forward who can initiate offense and put pressure on the rim.  At 7-foot-1, he can impact both ends of the floor. He played for one of the best prep teams in the country this past season, and that will help him in his adjustment to the college game. He is a natural athlete who played soccer before turning his attention to basketball. He is just scratching the surface of his potential, and I believe his best days are ahead of him.”

The EuroBasket competition in Heraklion, Greece, is set to start on Saturday, with games being played through July 20.

Iceland will take part in pool play for the first half of the competition, playing games against Serbia, France and Slovenia.

The top two teams in each pool will advance to the Round of 16 starting July 16, with the championship game set for July 20.

All the action will be available live on FIBA’s YouTube channel.
