Nebraska blood bank caps off drive honoring fallen LPD Investigator Mario Herrera
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lincolnites gathered Thursday to donate blood in honor of fallen LPD Investigator Mario Herrera.
On Aug. 28, 2020, Herrera was shot while serving a warrant. After several blood transfusions, he died 12 days later.
The Lincoln Police Department and Lincoln Fire & Rescue came together to honor those final days of Herrera’s life with a 12-day blood drive.

The drive, hosted by the Nebraska Community Blood Bank, ended Thursday, the third anniversary of Herrera’s death.
Capt. Todd Kocian said he hopes the drive continues for many years.
“Mario is a good friend to a lot of us here,” he said. “We continue to grieve with his family who lost a father, husband and son far too soon.”

Those who missed the blood drive can still schedule a donation with the blood bank.
“It’s just important for us to band together and give blood to help out others,” Kocian said.
