Nebraska Board of Regents approves $450 million renovation of Memorial Stadium
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The University of Nebraska Board of Regents on Thursday approved a $450 million renovation of the historic Memorial Stadium.
The board voted unanimously to move forward with the renovations, which include seating improvements and a new south stadium.
The board approved the initial contract for the renovations in April.
Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts said the project has three main goals: enhancing the fan experience, creating a modern facility and providing affordable access for all Husker fans.

Before the vote, several regents voiced concerns about being able to adapt the plan based on the economy and how much money is actually raised.
“Why now?” Regent Barbara Weitz asked. “We’re in the midst of leadership changes, we’re looking for $54 million for our operating funds that we didn’t get from the Unicameral.”
She said she was worried that she hasn’t seen enough details about the project to say, ‘Oh great, $450 million, you can have it.'”
Alberts spoke at the hearing, saying he’s “well aware of the size and scope and the challenge of the project.”
“This’ll be hard,” he said. “I’ve been called a dreamer. That’s OK.”
Alberts said major construction won’t start until 2025, which gives time for fundraising.
President Ted Carter added that there will be “spot-checks” and “off-ramps” to let the board weigh in and give approval on any adjustments.
“Here at the University of Nebraska, shovel doesn’t go into the ground until the money has been raised,” he said.
Alberts, Carter and several regents also noted that nearly 22,000 survey respondents helped inform the university on what improvements fans wanted to see.
Regent Elizabeth O’Connor said there will still be plenty of opportunity to share concerns with the athletic department.
“I’m proud of the fact that we want this to be a collaborative project,” she said, “because it’s not just a UNL project. It’s a project for Nebraska, and we want Nebraskans to be involved in the decision making.”
Part of the renovation plan is to demolish and rebuild the south stadium, including an improved student section and place for the band.
The university also plans to modernize bathrooms and update concessions.
Officials said the project is scheduled to be finished in July 2026.
