Nebraska Democratic delegates back Kamala Harris for presidential nomination

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska Democratic Party announced on Monday that its 34 delegates have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the presidential nominee.

State Party Chair Jane Kleeb made the following statement in a press release:

“Nebraska is proud to stand with Kamala Harris and pledge our support to her. The renewed energy across the state means more volunteers to knock doors and engage voters at the neighborhood level. Kamala represents a new generation of Democrats ready to carry on the work Joe Biden dedicated 50 years of his life building. Democrats will have a ticket that looks and sounds like America ready to deliver for the many, not the few, and to bring forward a new vision for America.”

One of the delegates, State Sen. Carol Blood, said Harris has what it takes to win the election.

“I do see the younger people being more enthusiastic, not only because it’s a younger candidate, but because it is a woman candidate, a female candidate,” she said. “A candidate that brings diversity to the table.”

After President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Harris is trying to win support from Biden delegates, who are now considered free agents.

“The delegates have already pledged to Joe Biden, so now what they’re going to say is, ‘Hey, we’re going to shift you over to pledge for Kamala Harris,'” said Precious McKesson, executive director of the Nebraska Democratic Party. “They’ll talk, they’ll debate, they’ll ask questions to each other about why it should be Kamala Harris.”

To go against Harris at the convention, a candidate would need a petition with signatures from at least 300 delegates, with no more that 50 signatures from one state.

Author Marianne Williamson said she will seek the nomination, but no one else has announced their candidacy.

In addition to the state party announcing its support for Harris, it is encouraging the vice president to hold regional town halls.

The goal would be for state parties to send voters to ask Harris about key issues.

The state party’s focus is now on helping Harris win the electoral vote in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District.
