The Nebraska Department of Transportation has some helpful advice on how to prepare your vehicle and what to do in an emergency.

Officials said everyone should check the latest road conditions on Nebraska 511 before heading out.

Then make sure you’ve got a fully stocked vehicle survival kit.  Include everything from tools like a flashlight to extra clothing and blankets.

The National Weather Service also has some tips that might sound obvious but a lot of people overlook.

“Keep a full tank of gas,” Deputy Director Mary Erickson said. “And if you must go out, keep your phone fully charged. This could become your lifeline if you become stranded.”

If you do become trapped, experts say it’s important not to panic.  Stay in your car so you don’t get lost and you’ll at least have a shelter protecting you.

Allow fresh air into your vehicle by cracking a window on the side not facing the wind.  Run your engine sparingly, as exhaust fumes can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.

And even if you don’t like them, wear a hat.  You can lose up to 60% of your body heat through your head.
