LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A potential railroad strike would not only disrupt the nation’s economy but also farmers here in Nebraska.

Kansas Grain and Feed Association, representing farmers in Kansas and Nebraska, said a strike would hit the local economy hard.

“It will basically put a stop to all production,” said Ron Seeber, Kansas Grain and Feed Association’s CEO.

He has called on farmers to stand up and reach out to their local politicians.

“I would urge farmers to reach out to their elected officials,” Seeber said. “Urge them to put pressure on the railroads and the unions to come to an agreement.”

On Wednesday, Amtrak canceled one of its long-distance passenger railroad routes that go through Lincoln.

“Amtrak has begun to make initial service adjustments in response to a possible freight railroad service interruption that could occur later this week,” the company said in a press release.

Business groups fear that a railroad strike could worsen inflation, lead to price increases and potentially force a lot of businesses to shut down.

The Consumer Brands Association urged the White House and Congress for support in preventing a strike

“With product availability, inflation and cost challenge continuing to affect American consumers, the supply chains cannot afford another crisis in the form of a freight rail strike,” Consumer Brands Association said.
