LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Flags across the state of Nebraska will fly at half-staff in remembrance of Pope Francis, Gov. Jim Pillen announced Monday.

Pillen’s order follows a directive from President Donald Trump.  The flags will fly at half-staff until sunset on the day of Pope Francis’ interment.

The Vatican announced early Monday morning that Pope Francis had died, just a day after he made an appearance from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Pillen was one of many Nebraska leaders who released statements reacting to the death of Pope Francis.

“Pope Francis devoted his life to being a servant of Christ,” Pillen said in the statement. “First Lady Suzanne and I are saddened by his passing.”
