Nebraska hit by 80 mph winds, possible tornadoes

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Wednesday’s thunderstorm brought rain and some high winds to the area.

In Lincoln, part of 33rd Street was closed down in the morning after a branch blocked the road between M and L street.

The Lincoln Airport reported 60 mph wind gust at 6:33 a.m.

Some powerlines were also downed, knocking out power for many.

“Our peak outage, we were about 2,500 costumers,” said Tyler Baker with the Lincoln Electric System.

As of this afternoon, LES says pretty much every outage was fixed.

The National Weather Service said northeast Nebraska and the Omaha area saw the most damage.

“Our strongest measured wind gust was 82 miles per hour … 4 miles south of Uehling,” meteorologist Paul Fajman said.

In Douglas County, the Omaha Public Power District reported early Wednesday morning that more than 33,000 customers were without power.

By 6:30 p.m., the outage numbers fell to fewer than 4,000 customers.

The weather service said it’s assessing some areas for possible tornadoes.

“Our warning coordinator meteorologist was actually headed toward the area of the tri-county area Cuming, Thurston and Burt,” Fajman said. “There was some potentially tornadic damage there.”
