Nebraska lawmakers comment on Jan. 6 insurrection
"I hope we can look past the past, and get to the future and work together," said Senator Dave Murman.
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) -Today marks the one-year anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection. Several Nebraska Lawmakers were present in Washington D.C. during the insurrection, including Congressman Jeff Fortenberry.
Last year, Channel 8 spoke with Fortenberry while he was under lockdown in his office while the mob raided the building.
“We will tolerate people marching and saying incendiary things. But when you’re having people storm into buildings creating highly unsafe conditions not only for elected officials but other people here for other reasons. This isn’t workable, this isn’t democracy,” said Fortenberry.
This year, Nebraska Senators are looking back at that moment and history and hoping to move forward in a positive direction.
“It’s very sad. It’s so hard to talk to both sides about a lot of issues nowadays, and you know the insurrection didn’t help that any. There have been disagreements on both sides whether you’re from the liberal perspective or the conservative perspective, so the shoe fits on both sides of the feet. I hope we can look past the past, and get to the future and work together,” said Senator Dave Murman.
