The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home in Giltner, which is 15 miles southwest of Aurora, to check on two dogs that were left outside “all weekend.”

The wind chill at the Aurora Municipal Airport dipped to 43 degrees below zero early Sunday morning.

When deputies arrived, they found one dog “in distress,” the sheriff’s office said.  Another dog was dead, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies arrested Kevin Jemison, 60, on suspicion of cruel neglect of an animal resulting in death and cruel neglect resulting in serious injury or illness.

The surviving dog was taken to a vet clinic in Aurora for emergency treatment of hypothermia and thermal injuries.

An investigation is ongoing.
