LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A central Nebraska man was sentenced on Wednesday for leaving his dogs in the extreme cold, killing one of them.

Kevin Jemison, 60, will spend a month in jail and two years on probation.

In January, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office responded to Jemison’s home near Giltner on a report that two dogs were constantly outside.

A deputy found one dog dead, court documents say, and another had hypothermia.

The windchill that morning dropped to 43 degrees below zero at the nearby Aurora Municipal Airport, according to the National Weather Service.

Jemison took a plea deal in May, reducing his charges to one count of attempted cruel neglect of an animal.
