Nebraska math and science teacher surprised with $25,000 award
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Nebraska teacher was surprised on Tuesday with a prestigious $25,000 education award.
Dexter Hanzel, who teaches at Neligh-Oakdale Junior/Senior High School, won the Miken Educator Award for Nebraska.
Gov. Jim Pillen, Nebraska Education Commissioner Brian Maher and Milken Educator Awards Vice President Jennifer Fuller presented the award to Hanzel at a school wide assembly.
“Your leadership and positive influence are changing the lives of your students, supporting your colleagues, strengthening your community and elevating education in Nebraska,” Fuller said.
Hanzel teaches math and science at the school in Neligh, which is about 30 miles northwest of Norfolk.
The Milken Family Foundation said in a press release that his classroom “is a hub of exciting hands-on activities and experiments.”
His students have built bridges, ramps and towers and designed containers to protect eggs during drops.
The Milken Award is called the “Oscar of Teacher.”
Hanzel can spend the $25,000 however he wants.
