Nebraska National Forest reopens after fire destroys lookout tower, campground

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Nebraska forest caught in October’s Bovee Fire is partially reopening.

The Bessey Ranger District, which encompasses the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey, announced that the forest is open as of Wednesday, with some exceptions.

Two areas decimated by the fire, the Scott Lookout Tower and the 4-H Campground, will remain closed through April 30.

The U.S. Forest Service is prohibiting visits to these sites under threat of a $5,000 to $10,000 fine and/or six months in prison.
