Nebraska parents warned about teens being turned into money mules while gaming
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The FBI’s Omaha Division is warning parents about a disturbing twist on money mule schemes.
It says teenagers and young adults are being targeted through video games and social media by people who produce child porn.
A money mule is anyone who transfers illegally acquired money for someone else.
The FBI says criminals are now posing as information technology or gaming upgrade companies and asking victims to accept digital payments from their customers.
Victims are told they can keep some of the money while converting the rest into cryptocurrency and sending it to these fake companies.
All of that money comes from the distribution of child sexual abuse material.
If you believe your kids have been roped into a money mule scheme, you’re urged to stop the transfer of any funds right away and call FBI Omaha at 402-493-8688.
