Nebraska senators addressed teacher workforce needs, goals

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska Legislature passed a bill and resolution that target teacher shortages and state educational attainment goals, prior to its adjournment Wednesday,
LB 1218, introduced by the Education Committee, creates the Teach in Nebraska Today Act that offers student loan repayment assistance for educators across the state.
It also commits $5 million annually to educator loan forgiveness and increases the number of teachers who qualify for forgiveness.
Under the bill, teachers from other states may be eligible for a Nebraska teaching permit if they possess a similar one in their current state.
Additionally, the State Board of Education may not require a statewide exam as an entrance requirement when approving Nebraska teacher programs.
The bill passed unanimously and was signed by Governor Ricketts on Tuesday.
“LB 1218 supports our teachers and schools – both public and private – to ensure we have high-quality teachers available to educate our children,” Sen. Lynne Walz said.
LR 335, also introduced by the Education Committee, sets an Educational Attainment goal for 70% of 25- to 34-year-old Nebraskans to have a degree, certificate, diploma or other credentials by 2030.
“LR 335 supports our higher education community and will better prepare our state to meet workforce needs in the future,” Walz said.
