Nebraska senators excited to find ways to spend over $1 billion in the State

Federal American Recovery Plan Act money and State dollars

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Lawmakers have an extra $1 billion dollars to figure out how to disperse this year, and many are excited to do it.

“I think the most distinctive part of this session is the additional dollars that we are both looking to spend the Federal ARPA dollars which is over a billion dollars,” said Speaker Senator Mike Hilgers.

Senators will decide how to use over $1 billion from the Federal American Rescue Plan Act, as well as state funds.

“I’m hoping we do it in the best way possible with as many brains and good hearts behind the decisions so we can really help Nebraskans. I think that’s one of the things I’m most excited about this opportunity this year,” said Senator Patty Pansing Brooks.

There are a few areas each senator hopes to focus on.

“I think there will be a big effort to try to cut Nebraskans taxes,” said Senator Hilgers.

“Utilize those infrastructure dollars, and those recovery dollars in a way that will benefit Nebraskans for many years to come,” said Senator Adam Morfeld.

“Mental health for young people. There are needs of things to do to bring 18 to 24 years olds to our state. We are really missing the numbers of people for workforce development,” said Senator Pansing Brooks.

Senator Adam Morfeld is making sure the voices of students at UNL, which is part of his district, are being heard this session.

“One of the bills I’m seriously considering prioritizing is my good Samaritan bill for those that have experienced sexual assault and may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs. A lot of people that have experienced sexual assault that is under the influence of alcohol or drugs are afraid to go to the authorities to report that for the fear of being charged for that use,” said Senator Morfeld.

Senator Mike Hilgers hopes that bills passed in the Lincoln area will also benefit the State.

“If we are doing good policy for the State, that’s going to help the constituents of District 21, North West Lincoln, and North Lancaster county. Certainly, there are issues, the airport is in my district, so there are some airport-related bills that will come. There will be some things where we focus on district 21 as well,” said Senator Hilgers.
