Nebraska senators plan to preview key issues for 2024 Legislative Session

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- Even though it’s still a couple months away, senators are preparing to discuss key issues for next year’s session.

Lincoln and Lancaster County state senators are holding their 2023 State Legislative Forum from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

In 2023, there was a lot of back-and-forth over transgender and gun rights.

Next year, many senators are looking to focus on issues like affordable housing in Nebraska, health care and our state’s ongoing workforce shortage.

Sen. Kathleen Kauth plans to focus on the Sports and Spaces Act, which defines group bathrooms, locker rooms and sports teams as either male or female.

Senator Merv Riepe disagrees, saying, “It is my recommendation that we amend LB 575 to stipulate our expectations to the State Board of Education, and require the State Board of Education to address the issue, not the state legislature.”
