Nebraska Soybean Board will show off soy-based dust reducer at Husker Harvest Days

DustLock was applied to nearly 3 miles of gravel roads surrounding the Husker Harvest Days grounds.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — As Husker Harvest Days approaches, the Nebraska Soybean Board is touting a soy-based product that will be showcased at the event.

The board is sponsoring DustLock, a soybean-based product designed to improve dust control on gravel and recycled asphalt pavement.

Normally, many gravel roads require treatment, like watering, to maintain a good condition.

The product aims to reduce gravel erosion on highly used roads while preventing mud, washboards, washouts and potholes. Treatment can also improve visibility on roads, and prevent dust from being blown into fields and homes.

According to the soybean board, the chemical soaks into the top half-inch of a road and binds with the gravel and dirt while remaining biodegradable.

It says one application of the product can last for years, depending on traffic, winter blading and frost conditions.

“This product is environmentally friendly and provides economic savings to rural areas,” Executive Director Scott Ritzman said. “The soybean checkoff is always looking at ways to utilize the entire soybean composition and this product is another way of replacing petroleum oil with soybean oil, adding value to farmers’ bottom line.”

As part of the sponsorship, roughly 3 miles of roads surrounding the Husker Harvest Days grounds were covered with DustLock, giving visitors a chance to see it in action.

Husker Harvest Days runs Sept. 13-15 in Grand Island. Visitors wanting to learn more about DustLock are invited to visit the booth at Lot 507.
