LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Around 90,000 Husker fans will jet to Memorial Stadium on Saturday to see Nebraska face No. 6 Oklahoma.

During that game, Nebraska will honor the 50th anniversary of Johnny “The Jet” Rodgers’ 1972 season.

Rodgers’ senior season was historic, to say the least.

The Nebraska native had 19 touchdowns and 1,361 scrimmage yards in 12 games that season.

Head coach Bob Devaney and company ended the season 9-2-1 and earned a spot in the Orange Bowl against Notre Dame.

That game turned into a blowout as Rodgers rushed for three touchdowns and caught one for six points.

During the same game, Rodgers also had a 54-yard toss to Frosty Anderson for another touchdown.

Rodgers became the university’s first Heisman winner and was also the first wide receiver to win the award.

Saturday’s game will be the first since the firing of Scott Frost.  He was fired after a 45-42 loss to Georgia Southern on Saturday.

Athletic Director Trev Alberts named Mickey Joseph as the interim head coach the next day.
