Nebraska troopers help 310 travelers, respond to 37 crashes during winter storm

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska State Patrol kept drivers safe this week as a winter storm affected travel across the state.

On Wednesday, the patrol said troopers helped 310 motorists, responded to 37 crashes and helped other agencies with 23 responses.

“This storm impacted a large portion of the state with heavy snowfall, blizzard conditions, and ice-covered roadways,” said Col. John Bolduc, the patrol’s superintendent, in a press release. “While our troopers were busy responding to slide-offs, stranded motorists, and crashes, we’d also like to thank NDOT and local plow crews for their work to make roadways safe for travel.”

The storm shut down a part of Interstate 80 between Grand Island and Ogallala for several hours.  It has since been reopened.

The patrol is preparing for “round 2” of winter weather.

Channel 8 Meteorologist Jessica Blum said eastern Nebraska could get more snow Wednesday night and Thursday.

Strong winds and dangerous temps will also be a factor.

Updated road conditions can be found on Nebraska 511.

“As this next storm arrives, it’s important to keep the safe winter-driving mindset and also be prepared for frigid conditions,” Bolduc said. “If you become stranded, stay in your vehicle and call for help. Do not risk exposure to the extreme cold by leaving your vehicle. Call the NSP Highway Helpline and our dispatchers will get help to you as soon as possible.”
