Nebraska volleyball defeats Creighton in front of record-breaking crowd
OMAHA, Neb. (KLKN) – No. 2 Nebraska defeated No. 17 Creighton 3-2 in front of a crowd of 15,797 fans – the largest regular-season volleyball-only crowd in NCAA history.
The previous record of 14,022 was set in 2018 during another match between Nebraska and Creighton at the CHI Health Center.
“This is gonna get people fired up about volleyball,” head coach John Cook said. “It’s a celebration of volleyball in the state.”
The Huskers prevailed 25-18, 25-13, 25-27, 17-25, 15-9.
In an exciting five-set match, sophomores dominated play.
Nebraska’s Whitney Lauenstein had a career-high 25 kills to lead the Huskers, the most by a Husker in a match since Mikaela Foecke in 2018.
“I knew it was going to be a big crowd tonight and I like big crowds,” Lauenstein said. “I think it’s, like, my time to shine, so that’s when I kind of stepped up.”
Lindsay Krause also had a career-high night with 16 kills.
The sophomore shared her thoughts post match about how special this night was for both teams.
“No matter who’s playing, to have that big of a crowd at a women’s sports match is very fulfilling.”
Freshman Hayden Kubik also set a career high with six total kills, including a kill for the match point to defeat the Bluejays.
The Huskers stay undefeated on this season and are back at home on Saturday to host Long Beach State, coached by former Husker assistant Tyler Hildebrand, at 3 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
