Permitless concealed carry takes effect in Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Starting Saturday, legal gun owners 21 or older in Nebraska can conceal carry without getting a permit.

But under an executive order signed by Lincoln Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird on Friday, weapons will still be prohibited on all city property.

Supporters of the measure say law-abiding gun owners will no longer have to worry about charges being brought against them for concealing their weapon.

Nate Griffith, secretary for the Nebraska Firearms Owners Association, said just by carrying a gun on him, he feels safer in the event of a shooting.

“You do develop a little bit of confidence, and you can actually develop a little bit of an air of security and authority that others can sense,” he said. “And I think that will actually do as much as anything to help reduce some incidents.”

Opponents fear that more people carrying concealed weapons will only lead to more violence.

Sen. Jane Raybould said the law doesn’t just apply to handguns, but to any weapon you can conceal, including semi-automatic rifles with shorter barrels.

“I think people have misinterpreted the language in LB 77,” she said. “If you can conceal it under your jacket – that counts. That’s a concealed carry.”

Lincoln Police say if you’re going to conceal carry, you’ll have to tell first responders right away upon contact with them.

Capt. Todd Kocian said all Lincoln officers recently received training that included an update on how the law is changing.

Opponents, supporters and police all recommend taking safety courses.

The Nebraska Firearms Owners Association is offering free training.

“A good understanding of how the various types of firearms operate is essential for the safe operation of the firearm,” Kocian said.

The Lincoln Police Department also recommends that you go to the Legislature’s website to review the changes to state statutes.
