LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Allick siblings are kicking off the 40th annual Cornhusker State Games this year, officials said Tuesday.

The Nebraska Sports Council said Josiah and Bekka Allick will light the cauldron on the event’s opening night on July 11 at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Josiah just finished his senior year with Nebraska basketball, averaging 7.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game in the season.

Bekka is a middle blocker with Nebraska volleyball.  She has earned numerous honors, including a spot on the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s All-Region Team in 2022 and 2023.

Council President Dave Mlnarik said the Allicks are the “perfect choice” to commence the festivities.

“We are thrilled to have Rebekah and Josiah represent all Nebraska athletes in this milestone year,” he said in a press release.  “Their skill and work ethic are undeniable, and their character, positive energy and team-first mentality have provided inspiration and pride for our entire state.”

The Cornhusker State Games go until July 21 at sports venues across the state, including Lincoln, Omaha and Grand Island.

You can register for the event at CornhuskerStateGames.com.  Athletes are encouraged to enter before Wednesday to avoid a registration price increase.
