Nebraska’s winter storm, blizzard conditions continue west with additional snow
Snowfall reports gathered as of early Tuesday morning had more snow north and west of Lincoln, with reports in town spanning anywhere from 2.5″ to 6″ of new snow from Christmas Day. Here at the Channel 8 station, we measured 3.5″ on Christmas as of Monday evening.
But beware early, as recent/melted snow and slush will lead to refreezing overnight into the morning, so count on some slick spots on roads and walkways through Tuesday.
Current winter weather alerts as of Tuesday morning included an ongoing Blizzard Warning in western Nebraska (with Winter Storm Warning/Winter Weather Advisory in Panhandle) and a Winter Weather Advisory now including Lincoln.
The winter weather alerts will continue to be in effect through Tuesday evening, if not early Wednesday morning. More specifics about your county’s current winter weather alerts can be found here.
Light snow is expected to continue across Nebraska on Tuesday with generally most additional amounts less than an inch in southeast Nebraska. These spotty snow showers could reduce visibility at times down to a mile or two, but overall impacts will be low.
The most travel impacts will happen in western Nebraska, with strong winds picking up snow and causing drifts. Wind gusts through late Tuesday could be around 40-50 mph, hence the Blizzard Warning.
Below is a look at additional snow expected from Tuesday into early Wednesday. Southeast Nebraska could see anywhere from about 0.5″ to 1.5″ with some localized moderate snow showers picking up here and there Tuesday afternoon. Heaviest snow from this timeframe will happen far to the north and west.
Heading into the new year, temperatures will remain colder and more appropriate for December. All it took was some snow to cut off our wave of unseasonably warm temperatures. Weather will also quiet down once we see this winter storm move on.
