New app launches to help prevent youth suicide in Nebraska

"My Companion" has been in the works for years and is based off software credited with over 500 lifesaving interventions

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Nebraska State Suicide Prevention Coalition announced the launch of “My Companion” this morning.

The new app was developed to help young people with mental health issues and prevent suicide.  It’s modeled after a similar app used in Utah that’s credited with over 500 lifesaving interventions, and accessed by more than 800,000 students.

Work on “My Companion” began back in 2018.  Dr. Dave Miers, who founded the Coalition, says “Suicide is preventable and there is hope, there is help and there are resources.  This app is a great way for youth to interact in a positive, healthy way and have this resource available if needed.  Connectedness saves lives and this app will make a difference.”

“My Companion” is set up like a journal, allowing users to share their feelings while also creating a support system.  Warning signs and access to emergency resources are prominently featured as well.

Right now suicide is the leading cause of death among Nebraskans 15 to 24-years-old.  It’s also the 10th leading cause of death statewide.

You can download the app for both Apple and Android free of charge at any time.
