New Details In Falls City Shooting
New details about the recent shooting death of a 52-year-old falls city woman. Attorney General Jon Bruning announced on Monday Ann Marx was shot accidentally by Richardson County Sheriff's Deputy Todd Landis.
It happened after authorities got a tip Marx would be buying a prescription painkiller from a resident at a retirement home in Falls City.
Landis says his gun accidentally fired when he was trying to arrest Marx. It's information Bruning made public, despite a judge's request to keep it quiet. Bruning says, “The public loses confidence in government when it conducts business in secret. We don't ever want to do anything in secret, whether it's the number of pencils i order for my desk, or the amount of money spent on travel in the criminal division, it's the public's business.”
Marx's nephew, who spoke with us says NE doesn't understand how it all happened. He thinks background checks and training requirements for law enforcement officials need to be re-evaluated. “Even if she was sick, even if she was buying illegal prescription medicine, i guess i just don't know why this needed to happen, even if that was the case,” said Cory Lippold
A grand jury will investigate whether charges should be filed against deputy Landis, who's on administrative leave. Meanwhile, the Richardson County Judge who issued the secrecy order, refused to comment about the case.
