New doors for Capitol’s West Chamber unveiled

After 12 years and $90,000, the doors were finally revealed during the second day of this year's legislative session.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – New doors to the Capitol’s West Chamber were unveiled on Thursday. For the first time in years, senators saw the doors closed.

During their time in the Unicameral, many senators have never even seen the doors closed. The reason they remained closed is partially to symbolize the open door policy but also because they were cracking and needed to be replaced.

After 12 years and $90,000, the doors were finally revealed during the second day of this year’s legislative session. Many senators were happy to see the doors were produced locally in Nebraska.

“When we have work that needs to be done in the Capitol, we always look locally first in hopes we can find the talent here. We have an amazing amount of talent here in Nebraska, and we use that talent first when we have the chance. If not we go to where the talent is and have it done,” said Capitol Administrator, Bob Ripley.

A shop in Omaha made the doors for the West Chamber. The original doors are now being stored at the Capitol, just in case they ever need to be redone again.
