LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Van Dorn Park, located just off of Hwy 2, will be getting a new trail for mountain biking and hiking.

Approved by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board on Thursday, July 9th, the proposal aims to create two miles of single track style trail within the West side of the park. Local volunteers, including cyclists and trail advocates, will be building the trail over the next two weekends (Aug. 8-9th and Aug. 15-16th) from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Volunteers will be following all mandated COVID-19 guidelines as they create the trail, working in small groups and wearing masks when necessary to help mitigate the possible spread.

This will be the first mountain bike focused trail in Lincoln and will be maintained entirely by volunteers. The trail will continue to evolve as features and improvements added before the end of the fall. The trail is expected to be open to the public after the second weekend of trail days.

Some local businesses have offered to help out with the creation of the trail system. White Elm Brewery will be hosting food trucks for the public and volunteers during the two trail weekends. Volunteers will be offered a free pint as a special thanks. Relish Lunch and Catering will be providing snacks for volunteers, as well.
