Another phone scam is hitting Lincoln residents.
This time, it’s someone claiming to be with the water company.
"I would strongly advise the customers, any individual, to not give out any of your personal or financial information to anyone, especially on an unsolicited call," says Gail VanSlyke with Lincoln Public Works.
Lincoln Water System says someone has been calling Lincoln residents, claiming to be with the company.
When they call, they say you’re account is past due and in order to prevent having your service stopped, you must pay immediately over the phone, using your credit card.
But there are a couple ways to tell the fakes from the real deal.
Vanslyke says, there are some things a real representative would never do.
"The Lincoln Water System will never call any of our customers and request credit card information. That is something we do not do."
He says LWS handles their financial correspondence through mailed bills.
And if someone on the phone asks for direct payment, try hanging up and calling the company back yourself to check.
Again, LWS says you should never give any payment, or personal information when someone calls you over the phone.
And if this does happen to you, you should notify Lincoln police using their non–emergency number (402) 441–6000.
