New York City will be costly bowl game destination for Husker fans

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Nebraska’s trip to New York City on Dec. 28 will mark the 54th bowl game in school history and the Huskers’ first since 2016.

Fans are sure to travel to watch them, but it could cost a pretty penny.

Husker fans are booking trips, but navigating travel during high demand times could be a challenge.

Steve Glenn of Executive Travel said that there could be tens of thousands of Husker fans at the bowl game at Yankee Stadium.

“The downside to that is you see higher prices,” he said. “The airlines’ tickets are double of what they would be, the hotels are double what they would normally be in New York City. So there’s good and bad of this time of season for Husker fans.”

As of Monday, flight tickets from Lincoln to New York ranged from about $850 to $,1500.

But with the demand sky-high for the Huskers’ bowl game, and the already busy holiday travel season, Glenn said prices can fluctuate.

When it comes to hotels, New York isn’t short on options.

But Glenn said travelers to NYC typically need to book a room three to four months in advance, so it may be hard for football fans to find a place to stay.

“I think people just have to understand that and that this is a busy time of year and when planes and hotel are full, prices are high,” Glenn said. “That’s why a lot of people use a tour package similar to what Executive Travel offers.”

He also hopes Husker fans make the trip about more than just the game.

“We’re ready to see a good turnout for Husker fans heading to the Big Apple,” Glenn said. “And it will be fun to see not only the lights of New York City, but the Big Red of New York City.”
