New York man caught with $222,000 in stolen checks in Nebraska, authorities say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Deputies seized over $200,000 in stolen checks during a traffic stop in rural York County, the sheriff’s office says.
Just after midnight, a deputy pulled over a vehicle for speeding on Interstate 80 just southwest of York.
The deputy later searched the vehicle and found 392 personal checks, 1,310 blank checks and “fraudulent” identification documents, the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators think the checks were “diverted” from the U.S. Postal Service and stolen from people in six states, according to a press release.
The sheriff’s office said the total sum of all the checks is just over $222,000.
The driver — 34-year-old William Stewart of New York City — was arrested on suspicion of several charges, including identity theft.
An investigation is ongoing.
