Newborn baby dropped off at Omaha fire station
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Omaha firefighters found a box on their doorstep Saturday morning; inside was a baby boy.
“The box appeared to be moving a little bit,” Battalion Chief Coby Werner told KETV. “So they peeked inside the box and did find a baby.”
The baby boy looked healthy but still went to a hospital, Werner said.
Nebraska’s safe haven law permits parents to surrender their newborn infants so that the baby is safe and properly cared for.
But this case isn’t covered by that law because it requires a face-to-face surrender at a Nebraska hospital.
Data from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services shows that 14 babies have been surrendered since 2008 under the safe haven law.
“We’re not going to judge anybody,” Werner said. “You know, the main thing is that, yes, the baby is safe and healthy.”
