Night event for storms across Nebraska; severe threat again Saturday
Friday’s shaping up to be one of the better days of this week – less humidity and cooler temperatures! Highs will climb toward the upper 80s today with increasing cloud cover and light winds.
By tonight, widespread storms are expected to develop first in southwestern Nebraska. The strongest storms are expected through southwest Nebraska, weakening through the night. They’ll move east late, ending up in southeast Nebraska closer to 2-4 a.m. early Saturday morning.
The primary threat will be damaging winds that could exceed 75 mph early on in southwest Nebraska, where there’s a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk. That risk diminishes to a Marginal (Level 1 of 5) risk across southeast Nebraska for maybe a few storms trying to maintain strength that could threaten large hail (~1″) and damaging wind (~ 60 mph).
Depending on that round clearing Saturday morning, later that afternoon there may be another severe threat at play. Scattered storms may redevelop during the afternoon and evening across southeast Nebraska, with a recent upgrade to that conditional severe risk.
The latest update on that front takes a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk for somewhat higher chances in some large hail and damaging wind once more. A brief tornado is also possible.
So that takes us through Friday and Saturday, with temperatures warming back up over the weekend – especially by Father’s Day.
By Sunday and into Monday, we’ll be worried about the heat again. Heat index values will likely be just below Heat Advisory thresholds of 105°, but heat expected to be dangerous for those not taking precautions with cooling themselves and staying hydrated.
