‘No new roads, no new houses’: Lincoln City Council puts sales tax extension on ballot

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln City Council on Monday afternoon unanimously approved an addition to April’s primary election.

The Lincoln on the Move quarter-cent sales tax, aimed at repairing roads, will now be up to the voters to renew on April 8.

“The top two things I hear from my constituents is investing in roads and prioritizing public safety,” Councilman Brodey Weber said. “And I think this is a program that does both of those.”

The quarter-cent sales tax, first instated in 2019, is set to expire on Sept. 30.

If the extension is approved, an estimated $18 million in taxes would be allocated annually to the Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department for the upkeep of existing and development of new roads.

“No new roads, no hew houses,” Councilwoman Sandra Washington said.

The expiration date for the tax would be moved to Sept. 30, 2033.
