Not ‘invincible’: Nebraska safety officials warn teen drivers as 100 Deadliest Days begin

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Nebraska Safety Council reports that the most vehicle deaths among teens occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

This period, known as the 100 Deadliest Days, is historically dangerous because teens are out of school and on the roads more.

“You know, younger people just think they’re invincible sometimes,” said John Lefler Jr., executive director of the safety council.

Travel as a whole also increases during this time, leading toward a heightened risk.

Almost 60% of teens involved in car crashes nationwide were not wearing their seat belts, and nearly 20% of all teen crashes are caused by distracted driving, according to the safety council.

Lefler said buckling up is the most important thing you can do to protect yourself during a crash.
