Occasional showers, storms continue for a much cooler day

Wind and heavy rain were the main hazards across areas of central Nebraska Monday night. Wind gusts over 60 mph were reported to have done damage to trees in Kearney while power poles were downed in Kennesaw, Nebraska.

Some 3 to almost 3.5″ of rain fell especially around Cozad, with reports of flooding there and up toward Taylor.

Today is also the 45th anniversary of the Grand Island Night of Tornadoes back in 1980, when seven tornadoes spawned in a matter of just a few hours. A fantastic write-up from the National Weather Service of Hastings goes through that event HERE.

More rain is in the forecast for much of Tuesday. Chances drop off by the evening hours later.

The threat for severe weather this Tuesday remains well south and east of Nebraska all together. Here’s a look at timing of rain throughout the day, eventually coming to an end from west to east across the state this evening:

Temperatures will warm back to the 80s by this weekend and early next week, but in the meantime, we’ll be cooler with 60s and 70s through the end of the workweek.
