A shooting in south Omaha on Saturday leaves three people dead and two critically injured.
“This is absolutely unacceptable,” Omaha Police Chief, Todd Schmaderer, said in a news conference on Sunday.
Authorities were called to three different locations on reports of gunshots. All within a thirty minute period, all linking back to the same suspect.
Schmaderer said if it hadn't been for one brave officer, more people would have been killed.
“Had it not been for the heroic actions of Officer Walker, I believe the suspect would have continued his indiscriminate shooting spree and other innocent lives would have been lost,” Schmaderer said.
Officer Coral Walker exchanged gunshots with the unidentified shooter. As more police arrived, they demanded the man put down his gun.
But the suspect instead pointed his weapon at Walker, leaving the 13-year police veteran without any options but to fire again.
“For the very small percent of our population who want to shoot at others, remember that the Omaha Police Department does not stop its investigation,” Schmaderer said.
There have been 19 homicides in Omaha this year, 4 just over the weekend.
Schmaderer said the Omaha Police Department will find every suspect who decides to shoot innocent people.
“I want to be on every shooter's mind that we will not stop looking if you happen to escape apprehension,” he said.
There was another shooting in Omaha early Sunday morning. Two more people were shot and killed. Officers are still looking for a suspect.
