Omaha Supernovas remove interim title, hire Laura Kuhn as head coach
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Omaha Supernovas announced Monday that Laura “Bird” Kuhn will drop her interim title and officially become the head coach.
Kuhn led the Supernovas to its first-ever Pro Volleyball Federation title after sweeping the Grand Rapid Rise on May 18 at the CHI Health Center.
Originally hired as an assistant coach, Kuhn took over after just two games into the inaugural season.

The Supernovas would go on to finish the season with a 17-7 record under her watch.
“Omaha is a special place and truly is the volleyball capital of the world,” Kuhn said in a press release. “The Supernovas organization is full of amazing people who have invested in one another to establish a culture of success. Creating such an impact in a one-of-a-kind community has been a life-changing experience, making this a huge drawback for me. I’m looking forward to being back with NovaNation!”
Kuhn isn’t new to this role, as she was the head coach for Texas A&M from 2018 through 2022.
She was named the SEC Coach of the Year in 2019 after leading the Aggies to a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Before A&M, Kuhn won the 2015 American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Assistant Coach of the Year award after helping Kansas get to its first Final Four in school history.
“We couldn’t be more excited for Bird to continue her tenure in Omaha,” Supernovas President Diane Mendenhall said. “She took the reins in February with this team and did a phenomenal job of guiding them to the championship. She fostered a championship culture with a united sense of purpose.”
