One killed by deputies after chase in Seward County, sheriff’s office says

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A man was shot to death by authorities Monday after a pursuit in Seward County, the sheriff’s office says.

Around 3:10 p.m., Seward County deputies tried pulling over a vehicle that was heading west on Interstate 80.

The vehicle turned around and started heading east in the westbound lane, the Seward County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

The vehicle later crossed over into the eastbound lane and came to a stop in Lancaster County, about 7 miles west of Lincoln.

Deputies told the two people inside the vehicle to get out, according to the sheriff’s office.

The passenger exited, but the driver refused.

Deputies saw a weapon in the driver’s hand and shot him, authorities said.

Troopers and deputies tried saving the driver’s life, according to the sheriff’s office, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Part of I-80 was shut down for several hours Monday as authorities responded to the scene.

Sheriff Mike Vance said a few days before this chase, a deputy pulled the same vehicle over and saw narcotics in the car.

The deputy asked the driver to step out, but he sped off.

That started a high-speed chase, but the deputy stopped the pursuit when it became too dangerous.

But Vance said that on Monday, the same deputy noticed the same vehicle on I-80, which led to the second chase.

A grand jury will investigate the shooting.  The Nebraska State Patrol is also investigating.
