One last mild day; 100°+ heat arrives soon
Northerly winds have returned, and that will set us up for a top-notch day weather-wise. The northerly flow delivers cooler air and lower humidity, so it will be another fall-like day. High temperatures will be in the lower-80s around Lincoln on Thursday. There could be a few locations that even struggle to reach 80°. This will be our last comfortable day in the short term.
We will turn warmer on Friday, with a high near 90° in Lincoln. Although wall-to-wall sunshine looks likely in southeast Nebraska, there is a scattered storm chance in western Nebraska. The odds of these arriving in eastern Nebraska on Friday night are very slim.
After Friday, the intense heat arrives. Per the latest data, the heat now appears to linger into next week. We could be dealing with a streak of 100°+ days starting this weekend and lasting into early next week.
A few of Lincoln’s record highs are in jeopardy as our forecast highs will approach those values. They are some long-standing records too:
- Saturday – 100° (1962, 1947, 1921)
- Sunday – 102° (1936, 1913)
- Monday – 104° (1929)
- Tuesday – 103° (1948)
By the end of next week, long-term data suggest a reduction in temperatures. As the heat diminishes, Mother Nature will also open the door for a few rain chances.
