Lincoln driver dead after colliding with utility pole Saturday night

Lincoln, Neb. (KLKN) – One man died Saturday night in a single-vehicle crash near Roca.

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said 20-year-old Alexander M. Schoneweis of Lincoln lost control of his vehicle and hit a utility pole near South 14th Street and Saltillo Road.

The sheriff’s office, along with Southwest Fire and Rescue, responded to the crash around 8:30 p.m.

Officials said Schoneweis was extricated from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

They also said he was wearing his seatbelt during the crash, but the vehicle was not equipped with any airbags or other crash safety equipment.

Authorities don’t suspect that alcohol and drugs were involved, but believe speed was a factor in the crash.

South 14th Street was closed for several hours during the investigation and electric power was briefly disconnected in the area by workers from Lincoln Electric System for the safety of rescue personnel.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office crash reconstruction team.
