Only Steak ‘n Shake in Nebraska closes as UNL revamps food court

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Steak ‘n Shake and Subway are leaving the student union at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s downtown campus.
The university said Monday that the moves are part of an overhaul of the food court.
Chick-fil-A will expand to meet an increase in demand, UNL said.
It is closing for construction but will reopen before the fall semester.
To make way for Chick-fil-A’s expansion, Steak ‘n Shake is shutting down.
It was the only Steak ‘n Shake in Nebraska, but it may not be gone for good.
The university said the restaurant could return elsewhere on campus.
Subway is also leaving because its contract expired.
UNL’s Housing and Dining Services will operate a Husker Heroes location there instead. Students will be able to use their meal plans there.
Imperial Palace will remain despite the vendor contract expiring.
The university said it has acquired the brand and will take over management of the restaurant.
That’s part of UNL’s long-term goal of phasing out third-party franchises and transitioning to university-managed vendors.
