Out-of-state Husker fans make the journey to Memorial Stadium for the first home game of the season

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Most Husker fans can agree that the first home game of the season is always a memorable one.

With fans traveling far and wide to gather at Memorial Stadium to cheer on their team with the iconic phrase “Go Big Red,” it is understandable why they are referred to as a “Sea of Red” as they descend upon the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s campus.

Large groups of people are decked out in their Husker finest, whether that is a red shirt, a team jersey or the giant corn hat. Each fan has their own way of supporting their team.

For some, that more than just dressing up. Some make the trip from surrounding states like Iowa or Kansas to show their support.

One of those fans, Dennis Livermore made the trip from Sioux City, Iowa, to spend the day cheering as a self-proclaimed “die-hard Nebraska fan.”

“Our expectation right now is just to get that first win of the season,” he said. “It’s gonna be tough, but there’s high expectations for Nebraska fans.”

Other fans made arrangements to get to Lincoln well before kickoff to absorb some of the culture that encompasses what it means to be a Husker.

Travelers stopped on their way to the stadium to check out the campus, with sights like Sheldon Art Gallery attracting the attention of many with its outdoor exhibits.

With the game over, many will either spend the night or head for home, craving another taste of the excitement that is unique to Memorial Stadium, inevitably urging some to make the journey to Lincoln again.
